Peruvian Journalistic Guild Rejects Interventionist Measures on Media

According to the Peruvian journalistic guild, this decision by the government would suppress the autonomy of the Andean country’s media.

On Tuesday, the National Association of Journalists of Peru (ANPP) denounced the attempts to summon government representatives to the direction of the National Institute of Radio and Television of Peru (IRTP), an entity that manages the public media.

This decision is taken on the basis of the Decentralisation Commission of Parliament. According to the Peruvian journalistic guild, this decision by the government would suppress the autonomy of the Andean country’s media.

He also warned that the prediction evidences “a clear attempt at political interference” because the proposed governance model constitutes in itself “a risk of editorial interference” and questions the legitimacy of the IRTP.

In this sense, he drew attention to the “urgent need” to prioritize in the public agenda a broad debate on the nature and functioning of state media.

On the other hand, the government cabinet assures that the measure seeks to promote suitability and plurality in the state media.

The formation of a board of directors made up of government representatives will be evaluated on Wednesday in an extraordinary session of the Commission on Decentralization, Regionalization, Local Governments and Modernization of State Management.

It should be remembered that the legislative proposal comes after the controversy generated by the current president of the IRTP, Ninoska Chandía, for making a video in her office to promote the university founded by the leader of the conservative party Alliance for Progress (APP), César Acuña.
